'Your taste is questionable!'

"What kind of kitchen is it
that doesn't have any Fritos?"
"In the pantry, top shelf," Roz said from the doorway.
"I'm surprised you'd think I'd forget your childish addiction to corn chips."

"You want something to eat? I want something to eat."
He turned, opened another cupboard and pulled out a bag of Doritos.
"That's not actual food."
"That's what makes it good."

Post-Thanksgiving Game Plan

"I don't see how I could, I'm just worn out .
The holidays just about did me in this year.
Every time you turned around, there was another party.
I don't think I've caught my breath since Thanksgiving."

Of course, she'd had the house full only a couple weeks earlier,
with all her boys home for Thanksgiving and her birthday.
Austin and Mason would be back for Christmas. A mother of grown sons
couldn't ask for better.

God knew there'd been plenty of times when they were growing up
that she'd yearned for some quiet. Just an hour of absolute peace
where she had nothing more exciting to do than soak in a hot tub.
Then she'd had too much time on her hands, hadn't she?
Too much quiet, too much empty space.

Why I Run

Dawn, the awakening, promise of it, was her favorite time to run.
The running itself was just something that had to be done, three days a week, like any other chore or responsibility.
Rosalind Harper did what had to be done.
She ran for her health. A woman who'd just had-she could hardly say "celebrated" at this stage of her life-her forty-seventh birthday had to mind her health.
She ran to keep strong, as she desired and needed strength.
And she ran for vanity. Her body would never again be what it had been at twenty, or even thirty, but, by God, it would be the best body she could manage at forty-seven.
She had no husband, no lover, but she did have an image to uphold. She was a Harper, and Harpers had their pride.
But, Jesus, maintenance was a bitch.

I run to not only keep my heart pumping to the best of its ability and maybe to burn some calories when I went crazy with pasta servings, but to ease any stress and flip any generally negative emotions, giving the phrase “run it off” another very literal meaning. I've run through breakups. I've run through disagreements with my family and friends. I've run through world conflict and affairs that keep me up at night.
It’s an opportunity to test out mindfulness practices I’ve picked up over the years, the ones I have such a hard time doing while sitting in my apartment.

Why People Kiss On New Year's Eve?

She stepped out, leaving the door open. They were at the top of the stairs when the clock began to bong.
"Midnight?" Roz looked at her watch to be certain.
"I didn't realize it was so late. Well, Happy New Year."
"Happy New Year." He took her hand before she could continue down the steps and, laying the other on her cheek, said, "Do you mind?" "No, I don't mind."
His lips brushed hers, very lightly, a kind of civilized and polite gesture to commemorate the changing year.

New Year's Eve is full of traditions, aside from getting dolled up with friends and families, but one of them dates back to the Romans.
While many hold hands and sing Auld Lang Syne – a traditional folk song written by Robert Burns in Scotland – others often share a kiss at midnight.

garden for longevity

she walked home through the woods and raided her personal greenhouse. She planted cannas in a spot she wanted to dramatize, larkspur and primroses where she wanted more charm. In the shade, she added some ladybells and cranesbill for serenity.
Her serenity, she thought, could always be found here, in the gardens, in the soil, in the shadow of Harper House.

What does your garden grow?

You may have a few humble window boxes or an ambitious veggie plot, but did you realize that when you’re playing in the dirt, you’re protecting your physical and mental health?

Gardening is one of the best ways to tune your body to the seasonal fluctuations in your environment.
Plus, it can reduce incidence of heart disease, osteoporosis, stress, and weight gain.
No wonder this is one of the most common hobbies amongst centenarians around the world!

And the best news?

Studies show that you don’t need to dig up your entire yard to reap these benefits, a few houseplants or urban window boxes will do the trick!
