Does Your Dog Put His Paw on You?

Eli studied the dog; the dog studied Eli. Then she lifted a paw in invitation. Only a heartless man would have refused to take the offered paw in his for a shake. “It looks like I’ve got a dog named Barbie. For a couple days.”

When he started out, Barbie fell in at his heel, tail wagging enthusiastically. “I guess you’re coming with me.”

She followed him up, into his office. When he sat she moved up to sniff at his keyboard. Then she wandered off, her toenails clicking lightly on the hardwood.

Most dog owners have likely experienced your dog pawing at your legs. While you may brush off this act as a mere annoyance, it’s actually your pup’s way of trying to communicate with you. And it can mean something really sweet.

If your dog puts his paw on you, it can be his way of saying “I love you.”

What kind of yoga is right for me?

“Sit down, be comfortable. Take a
couple minutes to breathe.”
“I usually breathe all day. At night, too.”
Her lips curved a little.
“Conscious breathing now. In through the nose
—expanding the belly like
blowing up a balloon, out through the nose,
deflating the balloon. Long, deep, even breaths.
Belly rises
and falls.
Relax your mind.”

There are many styles of yoga to choose from,
so if you're new to yoga, it might be confusing to
know what style to try.

“On an inhale, lean left. Don’t overstretch, Hester.”
“You’ve got me doing old-lady yoga.”
The annoyance in Hester’s voice made the whole scene
marginally less weird.
“We’re taking it slow. Breathe here. Inhale, both arms up, palms touch.
Exhale. Inhale and lean right.
Both arms up. Repeat that twice.”

We Can Dream

“Hey, what’s said in the—What is this room?”
“Butler’s pantry.”
“No shit?” He let out a half laugh as he scanned
the space again. “Okay, what’s said in the butler’s
pantry stays in the butler’s pantry.” That got a smile
out of her, a faint one.

His eyes narrowed as she slipped into the butler’s pantry for the wine.
“Are you looking for a kick in the ass?”
“Actually, I’m looking for a nice pinot grigio,” she called out.
“Ah, here we go. I hope I’m invited to dinner,” she continued as she brought
the bottle back to the kitchen.

What Was “The Good Wife” Really About?

“Maybe you could make a living.”
“I like The Good Wife.”
“Who?”
“It’s a lawyer show. Well, it’s really a character study, and sexy.”

But the show’s final episode took a different turn, reminding us that “The Good Wife” has never just been a show about power; it has also been about knowledge and the ways it can change an argument, a court case, a life.

Help to keep you Organised

"You leave notes everywhere.
All these pieces of paper scattered around,
with scribbling on them about dry-cleaning
and dialogue and appointments.
I saw the one about the
flowers you'd ordered for her, and the directions to the cemetery."

The concept is fantastic and I have seen similar ideas work really well both in homes and offices.
This sort of visual reminder really works for some people, as it makes each task very prominent, and often they will be small tasks that can be done in a few minutes – and what a lovely feeling to be able to take the post it note down after doing the job.

After he sent the e-mail, it occurred to him that while he couldn’t remember
if he’d thanked her, he did remember he hadn’t paid her for the groceries.
He wrote himself a note on the pack of Post-its he found in the desk drawer,
stuck it to the computer monitor. He forgot too easily these days.

Post-holiday blues can teach you to celebrate reality

He’d gotten through it. Whatever hounded him now, he’d get through that.
He’d never give this up again, this feeling of home and of hope.
To Whiskey Beach, he thought, lifting his glass and catching Abra’s eye, Abra’s smile. He drank to it, and everything in it.

When he stood on Monday morning after helping load cars, the feeling of hope remained with him.

He gave his grandmother a last good-bye hug.
“I’ll remember,” she whispered in his ear. “Stay safe until I do.”
“I will.” “And tell Abra she won’t be teaching her morning yoga class without me much longer.”
“I’ll do that, too.”
“Come on, Mom, let’s get you in the car.” Rob gave his son a one-armed man hug, a slap on the back. “We’ll see you soon.”

“Summer’s coming,” Eli said, helping his grandmother. “Make time, okay?”

“We will.” His father walked around to the driver’s seat.
“It was good to have all the Landons in Bluff House again. Stay ready for us. We’ll be back.”

Eli waved them off, watched them until the road curved away.
Beside him Barbie let out a quiet whine. “You heard him. They’ll be back.”

The best way to deal with this is to examine your ever-changing states—without judgement—knowing feelings and circumstances will inevitably shift again, and practice celebrating real life with all its many quirks.

Do you really know your Easter?

“Then there was the whole Easter thing happening.”
“The Easter Bunny came already?”
“What? No.” Now he laughed, the sound rolling down the empty street. “He hasn’t finished laying the eggs yet.”
“Eli, the Easter Chicken lays the eggs. The bunny hides them.”
“Whatever, they’re doing it at Bluff House this year.”

Happy Easter!!!

His mother wanted him to come home for Easter dinner. He’d intended to go, to ask Abra to come with him. He’d been ready for it, primed for it—the family event, with Abra in it, the big ham Alice would bake and his mother would insist on glazing herself.

The baskets, the candy, the colored eggs.

The tradition of it. And the comfort of it.

It was a good day, though he ate enough candy that the idea of waffles for breakfast made him a little queasy. But he ate them anyway, and put everything aside to enjoy the moments.
His father in light-up bunny ears that made Selina belly-laugh. The pleasure on his grandmother’s face when he gave her a pretty bowl filled with mixed spring bulbs in fragrant bloom.

Waging war with water pistols against his brother-in-law and accidentally (mostly) shooting his sister dead in the heart when she opened the terrace door.

Surprising Abra with a vivid green orchid because it reminded him of her.

They feasted on ham and roasted potatoes, tender asparagus and Abra’s herbed bread, on eggs deviled out of their colorful shells—and more—in the formal dining room. Candles flickering, crystal winking, the sea singing its siren song against the rocky shore made the perfect backdrop for the very good day he’d predicted.

Dogs Are the Secret

She charged, sand kicking, legs blurring. She clamped the ball in her teeth, raced back to him and
dropped it at his feet. He winged it again, and again. Lost count of the number of times. When he timed it right, she was fast and accurate enough to leap, snatch the ball out of the air.
And each time she did, trotted back to drop it at his feet, they just grinned at each other.
She didn’t chase the birds, thankfully, though she did give them longing looks.
He argued with himself, but curiosity and the little boy inside him won. He hurled the ball over the
water to see how she’d react.
She gave a bark of sheer, unmistakable delight and roared into the sea.
She swam like—well, a retriever, he decided, laughing all the way down in his gut until he had to
brace his hands on his thighs. She swam back to shore, red ball in her teeth, wild happiness beaming from her big brown eyes.
She dropped the ball at his feet again, shook herself. Soaked him.
“What the hell?” He threw it out over the water again.
He stayed out longer than he’d planned, and his pitching arm felt like overcooked spaghetti. But man and dog were relaxed and pleased with themselves when they walked back into Bluff House.

to Mental Health, Science Says

It’s common knowledge that having a dog, or any pet for that matter, promotes happiness. Dogs are the ultimate life partner: loyal, lovable, and absurdly cuddly. But now “science supports a truth the heart has always known,”
...
However, it turns out that the most effective cure for depression at all ages could be having a dog.

He picked up the dog biscuit. The minute she spotted it, Barbie dropped her butt to the floor while the look in her eyes went slightly crazed. Like a crack addict, he thought, about to take the pipe.
“Damn it, Barbie. You’re a good dog.”
He went out on the deck and ate lunch in the sun with the dog sprawled contentedly by his chair.
His life, he decided, if you didn’t count murder, break-ins and clouds of suspicion, was pretty damn good right at the moment.
When he went back upstairs, he heard Abra singing. He poked his head into his bedroom first and,
since the dog walked right in to explore, went over to see what towel art she’d left on the bed.
Unmistakably a dog, he thought. Especially since she’d fashioned a heart out of a Post-it. On it, she’d written:

Beauty and Wisdom

"I can't believe how fast he's growing."
Feeling very grandmotherly but sporting a sleek new hairstyle, Amanda sat in the bentwood rocker in Michael's new nursery and cuddled the baby.
...
"Does he?" Delighted Laura moved to stand over them.
The baby smelled of talc -- Amanda of Paris.

Culturally speaking, youth has a near-monopoly on our definition of beauty. But for photographer Robbie Kaye, the opposite is true. Her photo essay and book, Beauty and Wisdom, aims to combat ageism by documenting older women...

“Initially I was going to make these photos fun and frivolous, but in looking at the women, I realized how much dignity they had and how amazing they were,”

And she’d had enough, Eli judged, and looked a little pale again. “What’s for lunch?”
“We should go down and find out.”
He helped her up, but when he started to lift her, she brushed him back. “I don’t need to be carried. I manage well enough with the cane.”
“Maybe, but I like playing Rhett Butler.”
“He wasn’t carrying his grandmother downstairs to lunch,” she said when Eli scooped her into his arms.
“But he would have.”
