Teach Your Teenager How to Paint Their Room

It was the same room he'd been given when Ray and Stella Quinn had
brought him home.
The walls had been a pale green then.
Sometime during his sixteenth year he'd gotten a wild hair and painted them magenta.
God knew why.
He remembered that his mother--for Stella had become his
mother by then--had taken one look and warned him he'd have terminal indigestion.
He thought it was sexy. For about three months.
Then he'd gone with a
stark white for a while, accented with moody black-framed,
black-and-white photographs.
Always looking for ambiance, Phillip thought now, amused at himself.
He'd circled back to that soft green right before he moved to Baltimore.

Stop Killing All Your Plants

"You're killing that plant," he murmured.
"I know. I always do." She had to swallow, and that surprised her. Something in the way
he'd been looking at her just now. Something in the tone of his voice, the set of his body.
She could always be mistaken about a face, but not about a body. His was tensed, and so
was hers. "I keep buying them, and keep killing them."
"Too much sun." He hadn't meant to, but brushed the back of her hand with his
fingers. "And too much water. It's as easy to overlove as underlove."
"I hadn't thought of that."

Don't despair, here's how to become a green thumb

House plants are a great way of making your living space feel more alive. At least when you can manage to keep them alive. If you have a penchant for killing anything green, don't worry. Just follow these tips and you'll feel like a green thumb in no time.

“You’ve got a nice hand with flowers.” She flicked a finger over the
soap-wort, johnny-jump-ups and artesia sharing space artistically in a stone tub.
“It shows my sensitive side.”
“It shows you know what looks good and how to keep it that way.”
“Actually, I learned out of compassion and annoyance. My mother was always
planting something, then killing it. She’d go to the nursery, and the plants would
scream and tremble. Once, I swear, I heard this coreopsis shrieking, ‘No, no, not
me! Take the Shasta daisies.’ I couldn’t stand it,” he continued when she laughed. “I
started having nightmares where all the plants she killed came back to life, brown,
withered, broken, trailing dry dirt that crumbled from their roots as they formed an
army of revenge.”
“Zombie zinnias.”
“Exactly.” He beamed, delighted with her, fascinated by the way her face warmed
when she was amused and relaxed. “Vampire violas, monster marigolds and
gardenia ghouls. Let me tell you, it was pretty terrifying. In fact, I’m scaring myself
just thinking about it.”
“As a naturalist, I can certify you’re safe. As long as you keep them alive.”

Help to keep you Organised

"You leave notes everywhere.
All these pieces of paper scattered around,
with scribbling on them about dry-cleaning
and dialogue and appointments.
I saw the one about the
flowers you'd ordered for her, and the directions to the cemetery."

The concept is fantastic and I have seen similar ideas work really well both in homes and offices.
This sort of visual reminder really works for some people, as it makes each task very prominent, and often they will be small tasks that can be done in a few minutes – and what a lovely feeling to be able to take the post it note down after doing the job.

After he sent the e-mail, it occurred to him that while he couldn’t remember
if he’d thanked her, he did remember he hadn’t paid her for the groceries.
He wrote himself a note on the pack of Post-its he found in the desk drawer,
stuck it to the computer monitor. He forgot too easily these days.

"Power's out," she managed

He saw her carrying a candle through the dark, her face pale in its flickering light, her eyes wide. She fumbled through drawers in her kitchen, talking to herself, as she was prone to. And jolted like a frightened deer when the next flash of lightning broke the night.
Well, he hadn't thought of that, Liam admitted, and in a rare show of frustration, dragged a hand through his hair. Her power was out, and she was alone in the dark, and scared half to death. Hadn't Belinda told her how to work the little generator, or where the flashlight was? The emergency lanterns? Apparently not.

The Surprising Ritual That Will Give Your Home Positive Vibes

Driving nearly twenty miles up the coast to buy the smudge stick had added onto her already crowded day,
but when she took it out of her bag it felt like a positive action.
She’d burn the sage, cleanse her house. If she felt her house was cleansed, it was cleansed.

I can’t pinpoint when sage smudging first piqued my interest. It might have been the time I spotted sage bundles in Jenni Kayne’s chic Southampton, New York, store. Maybe it was when my friend—who works for a renowned high-end interior designer—told me they sage smudged their clients’ homes after each install. Or maybe it was the time I read about it in Vogue. If all these hip and fabulous people were doing it, why wasn’t I in with the It crowd? One thing’s for sure: Over the last year or so, sage smudging has transitioned from an alternative practice into a mainstream ritual beloved by the fashion crowds, interior designers, and celebrities alike.

But for now she did her best to clear her mind, to think only clean, positive thoughts as she lit the sage, held it over an abalone shell for safety and blew out the flame to encourage the smoke. Her home, she thought. The floors, the ceilings, the corners belonged to her.
The process, walking from room to room with the scent of white sage and lavender, calmed her, as did reminding herself what she’d made there, for herself, for others.
Faith, she thought, hope, and the symbols of them forged strength.

reason to not clean our homes

"Michael, not to
intrude, but could I ask how long you've been living this way?"
'l bought the place about four years ago."
"And you're still alive. You're a strong man, Michael."

We finally have a scientifically-backed reason to not clean our homes

______________

It was her first free day since resuming her role of Amanda.
She was spending it doing something she rarely started, and more rarely finished.
Housecleaning.
In tattered shorts and a halter, she sat on her windowsill two stories
up, and leaning out, washed the outside of her windows.
The volume on her radio was turned up so that the sinuous violins of Scheherazade
all but shook the panes.
Occasionally someone from the neighborhood would shout up at her.
Ariel would stop working— - something that took no effort at all— - and shout back down.

Beautiful Ways to Decorate Your Home for Spring

"To hell and back again with the dust, Allena. Look here at your flowers and candles and your bowl of broken shells. And out here."

He dragged her to the door, shoved it open. "Here's a garden that was suffering from neglect until the morning. Where's the sand that was all over the walk that I didn't even notice until it was gone? There are sheets drying in the wind out back and soup heating in the kitchen. The bloody shower doesn't drip now. Who did those things?"

"Anyone can sweep a walk, Conal."

"Not everyone thinks to. Not everyone cares to. And not everyone finds pleasure in the doing of it. In one day you made a home out of this place, and it hasn't been one in too long, so that I'd all but forgotten the feel of a home around me. Do you think that's nothing? Do you think there's no value in that?"

"It's just and ordinary," she said for lack of a better word.

"I can't make a career out of picking wildflowers."

"A living can be made where you find it, if a living must be made. You've a need to pick wildflowers and sea-shells, Allena. And there are those who are grateful for it, and notice the difference you make."

If she hadn't loved him already, she would have fallen at that moment with his words still echoing and his eyes dark with impatience. "That's the kindest thing anyone's ever said to me."

How to Clean a Messy Room

She followed him, using the time to study the house. It was just neat enough to make her wonder if Cam had been expecting her.

They passed a den where the dust was layered over tables, the couch was

covered with newspapers, and shoes littered the floor.

Missed that, didn't you? she thought with a smirk. But she found it endearing.
