Happy Birthday Nora 🎂

"Every year on my birthday I give myself a gift. It's very simple, really.

One day to do whatever I choose.

Whatever feels right to me."

How do you feel about celebrating your birthday?

As my birthday rolls around this year, I’ve been thinking about how people feel about their birthday arriving and whether they treat it like a celebration or not.

I have friends who feel it’s nothing special and prefer to ignore it, others who acknowledge it but don’t like being made a fuss of, and then others who love an excuse to take the day off work and enjoy being spoilt.

“We’ll have to save room for it and the ice cream,” John said. “After the birthday dinner. We were going to get pizza, but you started those meatballs, so we adjusted.”

Everything went bright, as if the sun burst through the pounding rain. “You’re going to stay.”

“I repeat, it’s your birthday. No way I’m missing out on ice cream and cake. We’ll wait for the others for eats, but I think you should open your gifts now.”

“Really? It’s all right?”

“Obviously, the genius doesn’t comprehend the power of birthday. Here.”

Summer Solstice

“Last year I went to Ireland for the solstice,” he told her. “There’s a small
stone dance there, in County Cork. It’s more intimate than Stonehenge. The
sky stays light until nearly ten, and when it begins to fade, toward the end of
the longest day, the stones sing.”

things to know about the longest day of the year

Why do we have a summer solstice, anyway? Friday, June 21 will be the longest day of 2019 for anyone living north of the equator. If pagan rituals are your thing, this is probably a big moment for you. If not, the solstice is still pretty neat.

Celebrating the Autumn Equinox

“It’s a fine day, isn’t it? Bright and cool. The harvest is nearly done, and we’ll have our
celebration soon,” he continued as he walked with the hawk on his arm. “The equinox, as
you know, when night conquers day as Gronw Pebr conquered Lleu Llaw Gyffes. We’ll
celebrate the birth of Mabon, son of Mordon the guardian of the earth. Sure there’ll be
honey cakes for certain. I’ll see you have a bit.”

🎇 Happy Fourth of July

Every year, the Quinns held a huge come-one, come-all picnic. Family, friends, neighbors gathered at the house, as they had since Ray and Stella's day, to eat, drink, gossip, swim in the cool water of the inlet and watch the fireworks.

🎆 Happy New Year 🎉

"Only a minute to go," he said easily. "I always think of that last
minute between years as untime."
When her brow furrowed, he knew he
had her attention and slid his arms around her.
"Not now, not then.
Not anything. If we were alone, I could do what I want with you for
those sixty seconds. But it wouldn't be real. So I'm going to wait
till it is. Put your arms around me. It doesn't count yet. Not for seconds
yet."

He took her hands at the countdown—ten, nine, eight. She turned to him, rose up—
seven, six, five. His arms came around her—four, three, two.
“Happy New Year, Avery.”
His lips met hers as cheers rang out, and the New Year began to tick.
As Avery rose up, Hope slipped into the kitchen. She’d open another bottle or two, she
thought, avoid the whole couples-kissing-the-New-Year-in ordeal.
She twisted off a cork as partygoers shouted out the countdown.
And Ryder walked in.
She stopped. He stopped.
“I’m just opening another bottle,” she began.
“So I see.”
Shouts of “Happy New Year!” burst out, rolled over them.
“Well,” she said. “Happy New Year.”
“Yeah. Happy New Year.” He lifted his brows when she started to offer her hand.
“Seriously? The hearty handshake again?” He shook his head, stepped to her. “Let’s do it
right.”

Post-Thanksgiving Game Plan

"I don't see how I could, I'm just worn out .
The holidays just about did me in this year.
Every time you turned around, there was another party.
I don't think I've caught my breath since Thanksgiving."

Austin and Mason would be back for Christmas. A mother of grown sons

God knew there'd been plenty of times when they were growing up
that she'd yearned for some quiet. Just an hour of absolute peace
where she had nothing more exciting to do than soak in a hot tub.
Then she'd had too much time on her hands, hadn't she?
Too much quiet, too much empty space.

He sipped his beer and watched some of the guests dance to the trio of guitars and marimbas.

Beside him, Del took a pull on his own beer. "Hell of a party."

"They pull out all the stops."

celebrate your big day as if it's your last...

“I burned his birthday cake completely forgot about it, never heard the timer. Might’ve burned the house down if Cal himself hadn’t smelled the burning. So he never got his ice planet or his ten candles. I hate remembering that. I burned his cake and he never got to blow out his birthday candles. Isn’t that silly?”
“No, ma’am. No,” Quinn said with feeling when Frannie looked at her, “It’s not.”

A study of 2.4 million people suggests the chance of dying is higher on your birthday

Birthdays are a time for celebration. But, in truth, after a certain age few people greet yet another birthday with unconfined joy.

According to scientists, the flatness we feel at the passing of another year is the least of our problems. It emerges that we are 14 per cent more likely to die on our birthday, according to new research based on a study of more than two million people.
