"Reels, meet Nora."

His lips twitched. “You got some weird-ass ideas.

“Yeah? Wait for this one. I want a pot-filler faucet.

You’re going to have two damn sinks, and you want one of them gadgets that swings out on an arm from the wall over the stove to fill pans with water?

Yes, I do. Maybe I want to fill really big pots with water for pasta, or for washing my damn feet. Or for boiling the heads of cranky plumbers who argue with me. Maybe Ive developed a faucet fetish. But I want it.”

"Look at that," Ethan murmured, sliding a hand over Seth's hair as the boy bristled. "It's a picture of the house."
"Looks good," Phillip angled it to get a better view of the clever pencil sketch of the two-story house on the bay.
"Really good."
"It's no big deal."
"I decide what's a big deal around here," Cam kept a hand on Seth's shoulder as he studied the sketch. Yes, it was clever. The boy had talent. But more, it meant home. To all of them.
"And this qualifies. This is a very big deal. Who's it for?"

Awesome Backyard Home Offices

Now she pulled open the door of the utility shed. It was a big square building, as wide as the
average barn, with hardwood floors and paneled walls. Uncle Jolley hadn't believed in the primitive.
Hitting the switch, she flooded the building with light.
As per her instructions, the crates and boxes she'd shipped had been stacked along one wall. The shelves where Uncle Jolley had kept his gardening tools during his brief, torrid gardening stage had been packed away. The plumbing was good, with a full-size stainless-steel sink and a small but more than adequate bath with shower enclosed in the rear. She counted five workbenches. The light and ventilation were excellent.
It wouldn't take her long, Pandora figured, to turn the shed into an organized, productive
workroom.
It took three hours.

Boyd gave a hoot of laughter and opened the door of the workshop. "What do you think?"
The garage-size room was full of tables, machines, shelves, tools, stacks of wood There appeared to be a number of projects in progress, but Jonah couldn't tell what they were, or what they were intended to be.
"Impressive," he decided, diplomatically. "What do you do here?"
"I make a great deal of noise. Other than that, I haven't figured it out. I helped Keenan build a
bird-house about ten years ago. Came out pretty good. Cilia started buying me tools. Boy toys, she calls them."
He ran his hand over the guard of a skill saw. "Then I needed a place to keep them. Before I knew it, I had a fully equipped workshop. I think it was all a ploy to get me out of her hair."

Women Don't Want Pink Tools

“Personally, I like being able to do minor repairs myself.”
She caught the smirk, narrowed her eyes.
“I can and do make minor repairs. Do you think I call you or your brothers over every time something needs a hammer or screwdriver? I have my own tools.”
“Are they those pretty ones with flower handles?”
Now she drilled a hand into his stomach. “They are not.”

🔥 Bring on the Bonfire

It was a perfect night for a bonfire. Only a few wispy clouds dragged across
the moon, shadowing it, then freeing it. The heat of the day eased with
sunset, and the air was balmy, freshened by a calm, steady breeze.

Everyone loves a runny, half-melted marshmallow
after it's been shoved on a stick and held over a
burning campfire for 30 seconds.

Obviously the taste is great, but there's something
even better about the primal act of cooking something
by sticking it on the end of a bit of wood.
Which begs the question, what other foods should
we be shoving on the end of sticks and roasting over campfires?

Every one of the girls had contributed to the making of it,
just as every one of them circled around the bonfire now,
waiting for the fire to catch and blaze. An
army of hot dogs and marshmallows was laid out
on a picnic table. Stacked like swords were dozens of
cleaned and sharpened sticks. Nearby was the
garden hose with a tub full of water, for safety's sake.
Candy held up a long kitchen match, drawing out the drama
as the girls began to cheer.
"The first annual bonfire at Camp Liberty is about to begin.
Secure your hot dogs to your sticks, ladies, and prepare to roast."

Teach Your Teenager How to Paint Their Room

It was the same room he'd been given when Ray and Stella Quinn had
brought him home.
The walls had been a pale green then.
Sometime during his sixteenth year he'd gotten a wild hair and painted them magenta.
God knew why.
He remembered that his mother--for Stella had become his
mother by then--had taken one look and warned him he'd have terminal indigestion.
He thought it was sexy. For about three months.
Then he'd gone with a
stark white for a while, accented with moody black-framed,
black-and-white photographs.
Always looking for ambiance, Phillip thought now, amused at himself.
He'd circled back to that soft green right before he moved to Baltimore.

Things Every DIYer Should Own

“What are you doing with that tool at four-thirty in the morning?”
“Some of the cabinet doors are a little loose—makes me crazy. I’m just tightening them up. And the pantry door squeaks a little—or did. I couldn’t find any WD-40 in your utility closet, so had to get mine. You can’t live in the world without WD-40, Ash. And duct tape. Plus super-glue.”
“I’ll make a note of it.”

Beautiful Ways to Decorate Your Home for Spring

"To hell and back again with the dust, Allena. Look here at your flowers and candles and your bowl of broken shells. And out here."

He dragged her to the door, shoved it open. "Here's a garden that was suffering from neglect until the morning. Where's the sand that was all over the walk that I didn't even notice until it was gone? There are sheets drying in the wind out back and soup heating in the kitchen. The bloody shower doesn't drip now. Who did those things?"

"Anyone can sweep a walk, Conal."

"Not everyone thinks to. Not everyone cares to. And not everyone finds pleasure in the doing of it. In one day you made a home out of this place, and it hasn't been one in too long, so that I'd all but forgotten the feel of a home around me. Do you think that's nothing? Do you think there's no value in that?"

"It's just and ordinary," she said for lack of a better word.

"I can't make a career out of picking wildflowers."

"A living can be made where you find it, if a living must be made. You've a need to pick wildflowers and sea-shells, Allena. And there are those who are grateful for it, and notice the difference you make."

If she hadn't loved him already, she would have fallen at that moment with his words still echoing and his eyes dark with impatience. "That's the kindest thing anyone's ever said to me."

Garden Sheds

A few miles out of the village, in a kitchen warmed with the heat and scents of baking, Brianna
Concannon looked out of the window as the ice-edged rain attacked her garden.

"I'll lose the columbine, I'm thinking. And the foxglove." It broke her heart to think of it, but she'd dug up what she could and stored the plants in the crowded little cabin out back. The gale had come so quickly.

"You'll plant more in spring." Maggie studied her sister's profile.

Brie worried about her flowers like a mother over her babes. With a sigh, Maggie rubbed her own bulging belly. It still astonished her that it was she who was married and carrying a child, and not her home-loving sister. "You'll love every minute of it."

"I suppose. What I need is a greenhouse. I've been looking at pictures. I think it could be done."

Organize Kitchen Utensils

“I’ll make you a sandwich, and you make me some wood slat things. I wrote down the lengths I
want.”
She pulled out a list, handed it to him. He frowned down at it.
“What are they for?”
“For me.” She smiled.
“Fine. You don’t have a width.”
“Oh. Hmm. Like this?” She held her thumb and forefinger together.
“About a quarter inch. What kind of wood?”
“The wood kind—whatever you’ve got around.”
“Finish?”
“Jeez, it’s a lot of decisions. Just that stuff, the clear stuff. I don’t need fancy.”

Pleased with her first project, she emptied one of the kitchen drawers, scrubbed it, measured and cut the liner she’d asked Sylvia to pick up for her. Using the pattern she’d outlined in her head, she slid in the wood dividers—and deemed them perfect.
...
Fiona laid spatulas, slotted spoons, serving forks in their allotted space.
...
He pulled open a drawer at random. “Jesus, Fiona, you lined them.”
“I’m so ashamed.”
“Let me point out, neither of us actually cooks, so what’s the point of having lined, divided, organized kitchen drawers?”
“To be able to find things, whether or not you use them. And what’s the point of having all these things in the first place if you don’t cook?”
“I wouldn’t have all this junk if my mother didn’t . . . never mind that either.”
“I can jumble everything up again if it makes you feel better.”
“I’m thinking about it.”
And she grinned at him, quick and fun.

THE Stump

Gary set the machine to idle when the stump rolled free. “You got yourself a stump.”
Simon ran his gloved hand over the body, along one of the thick roots. “Oh yeah.”
“Happiest I’ve seen you look since I met you. Let’s get her in the bucket.”
Once they were rolling out of the woods, the bucket full of stump, Gary glanced over. “I want you to
let me know what you do with that thing.”
“I’m thinking a sink.”
Gary snorted. “You’re going to make a sink out of a stump?”

When you don't have Jack Cooke

“East, west,” Parker interrupted, “it‟s still a basement. There‟s next to no natural lighting, the ceilings are barely seven feet, concrete floors, parged walls, pipes everywhere.”
“All the better for a Man Cave. Besides, why do you think I keep him around?” he gestured at Jack.
“He‟s more than a pretty face.”
“Take a cavernous basement and remodel it into a MEA? That‟s Manly Entertainment Area, to you civilians,” Jack explained as interest lit in his smoky eyes. “I can do that.”
