Say 'UNCLE'

Nate gave a squeal of delight when Luke snatched him. After a short, furious battle, Luke let himself be pinned. He grunted with exaggerated bursts as Nate bounced on his stomach.
“You’re too tough for me, kid. Uncle.”
“Uncle who?”
“Just uncle.” Chuckling, Luke ruffled Nate’s dark hair. “It means I give up.”

Anyone know where the phrase 'Say Uncle' meaning 'I give up' came from?

“Pearls lie not on the seashore. If thou desirest one thou must dive for it.” Chinese Proverb

“And the pearls?”
“These.” He lifted a finger to trace them.
“A symbol of family, endurance, innocence. They suit you very well.”
“They— I know I should have found a way not to accept them, but when Suzanna
put them on me upstairs, they felt as though they were mine.”

Health and Beauty benefits of oats

He looked down at the bowl she put in front of him. "Oatmeal?"
"It'll stick to you, coat your stomach."
"Mrs. Patch used to make me eat oatmeal," he said, thinking of the sharp stick of a woman who'd cooked for them when he was a boy.
"Every day before school, fall, winter, and spring."
"Mrs. Patch knew what was good for you."
"She used to put a little maple syrup in it."
Feeling her lips twitch, Annie reached into a cupboard.

This whole-grain food known scientifically as Avena sativa has become very popular and is known for its high fiber and healthy cholesterol-lowering properties.

Having oats in your breakfast is one of the healthiest ways you can possibly start your day. While they are generally disliked by children, this shouldn’t be much of a problem if you are an adult.

"It sticks with you."
"Yeah, for weeks."

Everything You Need to Know About International Women's Day on March 8

..................................................................................................

Nathaniel didn't share his former shipmate's disdain of women.
He loved them, one and all.
He enjoyed their looks, their smells, their voices, and was more than satisfied to settle in the family parlor with six of the best-looking women it had been his pleasure to meet.

The Calhoun women were a constant delight to him.
Suzanna, with her soft eyes, Lilah's lazy sexuality, Amanda's brisk practicality, C.C.'s cocky grin, not to mention Coco's feminine elegance.
They made The Towers Nathaniel's little slice of heaven.

Incredible Dog Houses for Your Best Friend

Nate realized one of the outbuildings was an elaborate doghouse,
decorated with totem figures painted in a primitive-art folksy style.
High life, all right.

"The Dark Night of the Soul"

Fascinated, he shut off the engine.
And heard the music.
It filled the world. A strong, sweet female voice, twined around strings and pipes
lifted with sunrise over the endless white.
It soared over him when he stepped out of the truck and seemed to come
from the air or the earth or the sky.

An Eyelash-Freezing ‘Icy Hell’

The cold struck him like a runaway train. "Jesus Christ. It freezes your eyeballs."

He jumped into the Ford Explorer she'd parked at the curb. "Your blood's thin yet."

"It could be thick as paste, and it'd still be fucking cold. Sorry."

The moment you step out into the frozen air on the way up Mount Washington — one of the most frigid spots in the lower 48 — the icy wind steals your breath and freezes your eyelashes. You can’t blink. The cold stabs your face and numbs your earlobes to rubber.

“It’s an icy hell,” said Amy Loughlin

What to Wear on New Year's Eve

He did, however, manage to focus on her. She was wearing a dress.
He supposed the technical term was dress for the skin of hot red painted on her.
It showed off that tight, athletic body he'd imagined in ways that might have been illegal in several jurisdictions. She'd left her hair down. Black rain to milk-white shoulders.
Sky-high heels the same color as the dress showcased slim, muscular legs.
She smelled like cool, secret shadows.
"You look amazing."
"I clean up good if the occasion warrants it."

Your Christmas dress is already in the bag but the party’s not over yet because New Year’s Eve is right around the corner.
And, while we tend to go on about how overrated it is, as one of the biggest party nights of the year what you wear really does matter.

“Can you show me another trick?”

Luke tore the paper in two and had the pleasure of seeing Nate’s eyes widen.
“It disappeared! The pen’s been disappeared.”
“Absolutely.” Unable to resist the flourish, Luke held up his hands, turning them,
back to front and back again. His son’s bug-eyed belief made him feel like a king.

But Harris revealed Monday in a Build Series NYC interview that he only puts on his magician’s hat — so to speak — for Harper and Gideon, the 7-year-old twins he shares with husband David Burtka, “here and there.” It’s certainly not a constant magic show or anything.

American adventures

“Then you're in for a treat.”
He was absolutely right. The long, winding drive in the spectacular T-Bird was joy enough. The little villages they passed through were as scenic as any postcard. The sun dipped down toward the horizon in the west, and the breeze in the open car smelled of fish, then flowers, then sea.
The restaurant was hardly more than a diner, a square of faded gray wood set on stilts in the water, across a rickety gangplank. The interior decoration ran to torn fishnets and battered lobster buoys.
Scarred tables dotted the equally scarred floor. The booths were designed to rip the hell out of pantyhose. A dubious effort at romantic atmosphere was added by the painted tuna can and hurricane globe set in the center of each table. The candles globbed in the base of the cans were unlit. Today's menu was scrawled on a chalkboard hanging beside the open kitchen.
“We got lobster rolls, lobster salad and lobster lobster,” a waitress explained to an obviously frazzled family of four. “We got beer, we got milk, iced tea and soft drinks. There's French fries and coleslaw, and no ice cream 'cause the machine's not working. What'll you have?”

Take a minute, look up there. That's a sight, isn't it?"
Her heart was still beating too fast for comfort, but she looked up. And there, above the ragged shadows of the mountains, hung a full, white moon.
Stars exploded around it, as it someone had loaded a shotgun with diamonds and blasted away. Their light turned the icing of snow on the peaks an eerie blue, and dashed the crevices and gullies into deep, rich shadow.
This, she thought, was what she missed when she allowed nerves to hunch her over, to force her gaze to the ground. And though she might have wished shed had this moment alone, she had to give credit to Lo for making her stop, making her look.
"It's beautiful. The guidebook I bought called the mountains majestic, and I thought no. When I saw them before. I thought not majestic but tough and rugged. But that's how they look now. Majestic."
"There are spots up there that you have to see to believe, and they change, even while you're looking. This time of year, if you go up, stand by the river, you can hear the rocks clack in the spring runoff. Take you on a ride up. Nothing better than seeing the Tetons on horseback."

“By the way, I like the tat.”
“Good-luck charm,” she told him. “If I wear the dragon, the dragon doesn’t wear me. How
about yours?” She walked around to tap the letters scrolled over his left shoulder blade. “Teine,”
she said.
“It’s pronounced ‘teen,’ not ‘The-ine.’ Old Irish for fire. I guess if I wear the fire, it doesn’t
wear me.”

Your Couch Personality

The room might be clean, but it did reflect his style.
The sofa was the dominant piece of furniture. Low and far from new, it was plumped with throw pillows. A Dagwood couch, Tess thought. One that simply begged you to relax and take a nap.
There were posters rather than paintings. Toulouse-Lautrec’s cancan dancers, a single woman’s leg standing in a four inch heel, skimmed at the thigh with white lace.
There was a Dieffenbachia thriving away in a plastic margarine bowl.
And books. One wall was nearly filled with them. Delighted, she pulled out a worn hard backed copy of East of Eden.

Sacred Sins

What Your Couch Says About You

It's like a crystal ball in the middle of your living room.

Everyone has a couch (hello, you have to sit on something while you watch your favorite TV show).

But whether you choose a design based on comfort, style, or even price is quite telling.

Find out what your sofa says about your personality:

He'd expected rustic and saw even in the half-light he'd been well off the mark.
In the spacious living area, the walls were a pale yellow. To mimic the sun, he supposed, and keep the dark at bay.
The fireplace was built of polished stone in golden hues so that simmering logs glowed inside its frame. She had squat candles on the mantel in deeper yellows and dark blues.
The long sofa picked up the blues and was decked with the toss pillows women insisted on having everywhere. A thick throw, with her key colors bleeding into each other, was draped over the back.
There were lamps with painted shades, gleaming tables, a patterned rug and two big chairs.
Watercolors, oil paintings, pastels, all of Alaskan scenes, decorated the walls.
To his left, stairs led up, and he found himself grinning at the newel post carved into a totem.

"Look up, Lower 48."

He looked where she pointed and lost his breath. "Holy God."

"Yeah, I always thought it was holy. A natural phenom caused by latitude, sunspots and so on. Scientific explanations don't make it less beautiful, or magical."

The lights in the sky were green with shimmers of gold, hints of red. The long, eerie streaks seemed to pulse and breathe, bathing the dark with life.

"The northern lights show best in the winter, but it's usually too damn cold to appreciate them. Figured this was a good night for the exception."

"I've heard of them. Seen pictures. It's not like the pictures."

3 great places to watch the northern lights

 in America

Right now, you may see the aurora borealis – also known as the northern lights – from northern California to the Texas Panhandle to the Virginia coast. About every 11 years, the sun's magnetic-field activity peaks, causing the lights to blaze farther south.

Here are top three spots to see the light shows, starting near the fall equinox on Sept. 22.

"It's as good as you think," NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center scientist Joseph Kunches says. "It's worth staying up late to see."

Northern Lights Oddity: Strange Sounds of Auroras Explained

Polarlicht

The northern lights of Earth are more than just dazzling light shows — they also generate their own strange applause too, a new study reveals.
The same energetic particles that create the dancing, dazzling northern lights high up in Earth's atmosphere also produce strange "clapping" noises just 230 feet (70 meters) from the ground, researchers said.
The results vindicate folktales and reports by wilderness travelers, which have long described sounds associated with the northern lights
