"A griffin."
"Good eye."
"Symbol of strength—and vigilance."
She turned her head, cocked it so that she could see his face.
"You know the
oddest things, Jack. But yeah, that's why I chose it."

How to find awe in everyday things

“Look, the sun’s coming up.”
Laura stirred and opened her eyes. Through the window she could see the
curve of the eastern sky. If she looked hard enough she could see the water of
the bay, like a mist in the distance. The sun seemed to vibrate as it rose. And the
echoes brought colors: pinks, mauves, golds. Softly at first, with the darker
night sky still dominating above, the colors spread, then deepened. Pinks
became reds, vibrant and glowing.
“Sometimes your paintings are like that,” she thought aloud. “Changing,
shifting angles, with the colors intensifying from the core to the edges.” She
nestled her head against his shoulder as they watched the new day dawn. “I
don’t think I’ve ever seen a more beautiful sunrise.”

You don't have to scale Everest to reap the benefits of wonder.

The word "awesome" is ubiquitous these days – used to describe almost anything agreeable from a slice of Margherita pizza to that new sweater you just bought. But can these things really inspire a life-altering sense of wonderment and reverence?

She stroked the baby's cheek and
thought—hoped—Carrie smiled a little.
Grace was tempted to sing her to sleep,
but knew the nursing staff rolled their
eyes and snickered whenever she tried a lullaby.
Still, the babies were rarely
critical of her admittedly poor singing voice,
so she half sang, half murmured,
until Carrie's baby owl's eyes grew heavy.
Even when she slept, Grace continued to rock.
It was self-serving now, she knew.
Anyone who had ever rocked a baby
understood that it soothed the adult, as well
as the child.

What happens to your body when you cry?

“I didn’t mean to make you cry.”
“I cry easily. You should see me after a greeting-card commercial on TV.”

Whether triggered by sad movies or happy reunions,
stubbed toes or allergies,
crying seems to serve many purposes.

He brushed the hair back from her face. "You've got a right to break
down. I don't know anyone else who'd have made it this far without a blowout.
But don't cry anymore, M.J. It rips me up."
"I hate to cry." She sniffled, knuckled tears away.
"I'm glad to hear it."

"Call me late to dinner. Just leave my name alone."

He nodded in agreement. "Do I call you Kathleen?"
"I certainly hope not." She grinned. "No one else does."
It took him a moment to understand. "Kasey, then."

As far as the “you can call me anything you want,” portion of that joke, I can definitely relate. My name — which seems pretty straightforward to me — is apparently a booger to remember, pronounce or get right half the time. You might never call me late to dinner, but one of every 20 people are going to call me “John.”

A cough of laughter escaped him. It was the last thing he'd expected. "You're kidding."
"It stands for Magdalen Juliette," she repeated between clenched teeth.
"And the only people who know that are my family, Bailey and Grace.
In other words, only people I love and trust, which now includes you."
"Magdalen Juliette," he repeated, rolling it around on his tongue.
"Quite a handle, sugar."
"It's M.J. Legally M.J., because that's what I wanted.
And if you ever call me any form of Magdalen Juliette other than M.J.,
I will personally and with great pleasure skin you alive."

When the last boom echoed, she went down to make a fresh batch of drinks. It pleased
her, a great deal, to know her guests had a good holiday experience, and were even now
talking about the show, the feel, the local color.
It pleased her, too, to realize Lizzy wanted her companionship.
She fixed more chips and salsa, plated the pretty mini cupcakes topped with American
flags she’d gotten from the bakery. She left some on the counter for those who came
down, trayed the rest to carry up for those who wanted more time out in the summer night.

Beers of Summer

He moved to the bar, elbowed in and ordered a Bitter Root beer—in a bottle.
Dobie squeezed beside him, punched him in the arm. “Why do you wanna drink that foreign shit?”
“Brewed in Montana.” He passed the bottle to Dobie, ordered another.
“Pretty good beer,” Dobie decided after a pull. “But it ain’t no Budweiser.”
“You’re not wrong.” Amused, Gull tapped his bottle to Dobie’s, drank.
“Beer. The answer to so many questions.”

interest in the game gathered around.

10 Powerful Reasons People Have Gotten Tattoos

"You've got a tattoo on your incredibly perfect bottom."
She laughed then, and tossed her hair back. "I didn't think you'd noticed."
"I noticed. Why do you have a tattoo of a winged horse on your butt, Grace?"
"It was an impulse, one of those wild-girl things I dragged M.J. and Bailey into."
"They have winged horses on their—"
"No, and what they do have is their little secret. I wanted the winged horse because it was free. You couldn't catch it unless it wanted to be caught." She lifted a hand to his face, changed the mood subtly. "I never wanted to be caught. Before."

On Valentine's - "See beneath your beautiful"

He walked over, sat beside her, took her hand. "I've never told anyone I loved them before," he began.
"I never loved anyone. Not a woman, not family, not a friend."
"Jack." Swamped with emotion, she brushed the hair from his brow.
"You just never had a chance to."

What had she expected? she asked herself.
No man would be comfortable around a woman after hearing a story like the one she'd told him. And why in God's name had she dumped out her past that way?
How could she have trusted him with pieces of herself that she'd never given anyone before?

Even Boyd, the person she considered her closest friend, knew only about the foster homes. As for the rest, she'd buried it-until last night. She didn't doubt that her tie to Liz had unlocked the door and let the nightmare back in.

But she should have been able to handle it, to hold back, to safeguard her privacy.
The fact that she hadn't could mean only one thing.
Indulging in a sigh, Althea pushed herself up and rested her brow on her knees. She was in love with Colt.

Ridiculous as it was, she had to face the truth. And, just as she'd always suspected, love made you stupid, vulnerable and unhappy. There ought to be a pill, she mused. A serum she could take. Like an antidote for snakebite.

The sound of footsteps had her whipping her head up.

Her eyes widened when Colt came to the doorway carrying a tray.

He had a split second to read her reaction before she closed it off. She'd thought he'd taken a hike, he realized grimly.
He was going to have to show the lady that he was sticking, no matter how hard she tried to shake him off.

tattoos

It stung. She couldn't have said why, but the bland and goody-goody description
put her back up. "I've got a tattoo on my butt."
He set the rather sloppy sandwich he'd put together down. "Excuse me?"
"I have a tattoo on my butt," she repeated, with a combative gleam in her eye.
"Is that so?" He couldn't wait to see it.

....

"The tattoo? What is it?"
Embarrassed now, she slapped ham over mustard. "I hardly see that it's an issue."
"Come on." He grinned, leaning over to tug on her hair again. "A butterfly? A rosebud? Or are you really a biker chick in disguise,

with a skull and crossbones hiding under my jeans?"
"A unicorn," she muttered.
He bit the tip of his tongue. "Cute."

The hidden meaning

Tatuagem rosa e cruz

Tattoos talk. Rather than meaning something literal and universal, the art on our bodies is often personal and complicated. A magnificent panorama of an underwater world is unlikely to simply declare the bearer's love of trout. However, some designs still shout a very particular meaning

judge people by their shoes

“You like shoes.”
“Like is a soft, weak word for my feelings regarding shoes.”

Happy Ever After

Maybe you were already judging people by the shoes they wear, but now, a new study reveals that at least some of those judgments are accurate. We can correctly guess a person's age and income from their footwear -- plus, incredibly, whether they're more likely to be an overly-attached girlfriend or boyfriend.
